Born in Brooklyn, NY, Chris Butler is a longtime performer and teacher who has has been passionate about music since he was very young. His father, who is also very musical, is fond of telling the story of baby Chris chewing on his Fender Telecaster while going through teething. As a young child, Chris would play with any instrument he could get his hands on. By the fith grade, he began to take the guitar more seriously, learning chords and jamming with his dad.  Soon thereafter, Chris discovered bass guitar and his interest in music was taken to a whole new level.

In middle school Chris played bass in the school's “Rock Ensemble” while also playing viola in the school orchestra. By his freshman year of high school, Chris was playing along on the bass, note-for-note, with his favorite Rush albums, and suddenly realized he might have a future in music. Attending high school in West Virginia proved challenging musically. He recalls, “I lived in a rural town and went to a small school. There weren’t a lot of opportunities to play, so I created my own.” Chris would convince his principal to allow him to put on talent shows and other performances at school. He taught his fellow classmates how to play instruments and sing, just so that he could have a band to play with.

Chris graduated high school at age 17 and immediately flew to Hollywood to study bass guitar at Musicians Institute. He studied with a "Who’s-Who" of touring and recording artists including Jeff Berlin, Tim Bogart (Vanilla Fudge), Billy Sheehan, Paul Gilbert, and many more. He recalls, “I got to play with musicians from all over the world. It was an amazing time!” Chris eventually left Hollywood to hit the road with his first pro band, Lookin’ Blue.  Chris and the band called Atlanta, GA home as the band toured and perfomed around the Southeastern US. Since that time, Chris has played as a bassist or guitarist for some of Atlanta’s hottest original bands. He also spent plenty of time on the road with a number of hardworking cover bands, and spent a total of 8 years with his most successful original project, 7 Sharp 9.  The band released three CDs and toured full-time, with a number of Chris’ songs receiving national radio airplay and TV exposure.

Eventually Chris grew weary of the road life and transitioned to his next role as a founding music teacher at St. Benedict’s Episcopal School in Smyrna, GA. At this K-8 school, Chris used all of his years of performance experience to build music programs from the ground up. He also began taking on private students in piano and guitar. After 7 years at St. Benedict’s, Chris was recruited to build new music programs at another Atlanta-area school, The SAE School. There, he built a middle school orchestra program from scratch, and also pioneered a high school Rock Band Class that immersed students in the field of music business. The largely project-based school was a great opportunity for Chris to help the kids to get a taste of everything he had experienced throughout his many years in the business.

Alongside his teaching career, Chris has also continued to grow as a musician, and has steadily increased his versatility. He has taught private students in many instruments including guitar, bass, piano, ukulele, drums, violin, viola, cello and upright bass. In Chris's words, “When I started, I didn’t know I would love teaching so much! But sharing music with my students and helping them grow really fulfills me and makes me happy. I see each student as an individual with his or her own needs and strengths. I really enjoy getting to know each student and helping them shine!”

Chris also continues to perform as a solo artist and with local bands around Atlanta.
